  • Check in with your emotions a few times a day so you get to know your emotional reactions. For accountability and guidance, use an emotions app, like the How We Feel app.
  • Label pleasant emotions, too. We often lump all pleasant feelings under “happy,” but “excited” is very different from “grateful.”
  • Note that the following are not emotion words: disrespected, misunderstood, supported, appreciated.
  • Don’t assume what other people are feeling or that their reaction is about you. You never know what’s going on in someone’s life. We tend to guess incorrectly and take it personally.
